Highlights from building TED's first tech store

Posted by Erin Johnson on April 18, 2018

Last week, b8ta participated in one of the most influential conferences in the world: the annual TED conference in Vancouver. As longtime watchers of TED talks, and part of a generation invested in transformative ideas, we were honored when TED asked us to build a store amongst some of our favorite thought-leaders worldwide.

We’re overwhelmed (and exhausted) by the success of the event. We featured 19 of our partners’ products at the event, selling over 1,000 items to 2,000 of the most influential attendees in the world!

Here are our top three highlights:

Our fastest store ever built. We may be expert store builders, but our ability to build a beautiful store quickly was tested when TED reached out to b8ta just under two months ago. They challenged us to bring a b8ta experience to TED and our incredible retail team was able to execute it flawlessly. If there was ever any doubt —yes, we really are that good at building stores.

A phenomenal performance by our b8ta testers. We brought three of our b8ta testers all the way to Vancouver and they delivered the same impressive knowledge and product demos to TED shoppers that they do every day in our stores. With crowds of attendees constantly in the store, our b8ta testers kept up their energy and engaged with the most attendees per hour in b8ta history.
Customers who loved the products, and also MADE them! TED attendees are made up of founders, CEOs, scientists, activists, and more. They’re innovators in their fields and a perfect audience for a b8ta store. Each attendee loved experiencing the unique and innovative products that b8ta brought to TED. The magic we felt most profoundly was when a founder, like Ariel Garten from Muse, was able to engage with attendees directly about their products. This is what b8ta exists for: to open the door for product makers to get their products in front of the people who care most about them. It was also great to have Light.co founder Dr. Rajiv Laroia drop by the store after speaking at the conference himself! Needless to say, Light L16 cameras sold out almost instantly after his talk.

Thank you to all of our partners who worked with us quickly to take advantage of this opportunity. And to our amazing team of builders, testers, and managers for a history-making week at TED.
